My Skincare Journey: Lessons Learned from Trial, Error, and a Lot of TLC

Hey there, gorgeous! If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably had your fair share of skincare missteps (and I mean a lot of them!). But trust me, that’s all part of the fun and the process. Skincare is definitely a journey, not a destination, and I’ve learned so much along the way that I’m excited to share with you.

Let’s rewind a bit, shall we? My skincare journey actually started back in high school, and, looking back, I can’t help but laugh at some of the things I tried. Homemade oatmeal masks, mud masks, and—wait for it—banana masks! Yep, I really thought banana was the miracle cure for all my skin problems. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t.

One thing I did get right, though, was steaming my face with my sisters. We’d heat up water in the kettle, pour it into a big bowl, throw a towel over our heads, and lean over it so the steam would open our pores. It was like a mini spa day in the middle of our kitchen—and let’s be real, I probably looked a little like a confused ghost. But hey, it felt good!

Now, let’s talk about some of the things I didn’t know back then. For example, I honestly thought pool chlorine would dry out my acne and make my skin clear. Oh, young me. Turns out, a little sunscreen and proper hydration are actually the keys to healthy skin (who knew?).

It wasn’t until college that I really started understanding the importance of moisturizing my skin. Like, really moisturizing. For years, I barely touched lotion, thinking that my oily T-zone didn’t need it. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that moisturizing is a must—no matter your skin type.

The Big Skincare Revelation: Trial and Error (A Lot of It!)

Fast-forward to 2016, when I started my YouTube channel and got deep into makeup tutorials. That’s when I began experimenting more seriously with skincare products. After all, great makeup starts with great skin, right?

Around this time, I also noticed some fine lines creeping in—thanks, Dad (for the forehead wrinkles, that is). I’ve learned to love myself as I am, but let’s be real, I still want to minimize those lines as much as possible. Anyone else feel me on this?

After a lot of trial and error, I finally discovered what works for me, and I want to share the love with you!

5 Skincare Staples That Actually Work for Me

  1. Vitamin C Serum: This is a game-changer. I can’t tell you how much it’s helped brighten up my complexion and reduce those fine lines. I use it in the morning, and it’s like a little burst of energy for my skin. It gives me that healthy glow without being too heavy.
  2. Retinol: If you’re looking to fight fine lines and wrinkles (and who isn’t?), retinol is your friend. I use this in my nighttime routine, and while it can be a bit drying at first, the results are worth it. Over time, it’s really helped with the texture of my skin and keeping those lines at bay.
  3. Gentle Cleanser: I have combination skin (hello, oily T-zone and dry cheeks!), and finding the right face wash has been key. I need something that cleans my pores without leaving my skin feeling stripped or dry. So, I look for cleansers that are gentle but effective in removing dirt, makeup, and all that excess sebum buildup.
  4. Hydrating Moisturizer: Moisturizer is a must. I use something lightweight but hydrating, and it’s become a non-negotiable step in my routine. If I don’t, my skin feels dry, flaky, and uncomfortable—and we are not here for that.
  5. Hyaluronic Acid: This one’s my secret weapon for plumping up my skin. It gives me that hydrated, fresh-faced look without being too thick or greasy. Plus, it helps keep things smooth and supple, which is exactly what I need as I age

My Advice: Find What Works for You

Look, I’m not a skincare expert (though I’ve definitely learned a thing or two), but I am someone who’s spent years experimenting, testing, and paying attention to what my skin really needs. The biggest piece of advice I can give you? Test, test, and test some more. Everyone’s skin is different, and what works wonders for me might not be the holy grail for you—but hopefully, these tips and product recommendations will give you a head start on your own skincare journey.

Remember, your skin is as unique as you are, and it’s so worth taking the time to listen to it, love it, and give it what it needs to glow. And hey, if a few banana masks come into play? No judgment here!
