New Partner - To buy them a gift or not?

New Partner – Gift for Valentines?

Should I give the person I’m dating a gift for Valentines?

You’ve just started seeing someone, let’s say you’re a few weeks to months in but you don’t know if they are your boyfriend/girlfriend yet. You don’t want to appear overeager but you also want to show that you care, and hope the relationship continues to flourish.

For the Guys

DO NOT: Do not buy lingerie/undies unless that was expressed, as this is too early in the game for sexual gifts.

DO: Keep it classy. Dinner, plus a card and a bouquet of flowers.

Dinner

Whether it’s a candlelit homemade meal, or a nice restaurant, a dinner date is going to impress.

Think of something nicer than Chili’s, but it doesn’t have to be overly expensive. If they take reservations that is a good sign that it’s nice enough.

If you’re in the Austin area, take a look at my restaurant guide specifically at the seafood and steak houses as those are the most romantic!

If you are booking a reservation they book up 2-3 weeks out. Get Moving!

Flowers

Don’t buy the vase of flowers. She probably already has plenty of vases and they are way more expensive!

Instead, go to HEB or your local grocery store and make your own bouquet for under $30. Roses are the favorite for this event, however Peonies and Garden Roses are also acceptable, and you can add in some greenery and sprigs of baby’s breath.

For the Girls

Do Not: If he has invited you to dinner, don’t forget to bring him something as well. It is a polite and sweet gesture!

Do: A card and a small gift shows you’re thoughtful and appreciative.

This could be as inexpensive as some candies, to something a bit nicer like a shirt or tie. Find gift ideas for him on my post What to Give my Boyfriend for Valentines”
